What is Lactated Ringer's?

Lactated Ringer's solution (LR, also called Ringer's lactate or LRS) is a sterile, isotonic IV fluid containing sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium and lactate. Its electrolyte balance is closer to the body's own fluids than plain saline, which is why it is often called a "balanced" fluid.

Lactated Ringer's vs. normal saline

Both are isotonic and widely used. Normal saline is salt and water only and is the standard choice for flushing lines and running alongside many medications. Lactated Ringer's adds potassium, calcium and lactate, so many people choose it for hydration and recovery. If you are following a care plan, buy the fluid it specifies. Lactated Ringer's for dogs and cats

LR is the fluid veterinarians most often prescribe for subcutaneous (sub-Q) fluids at home, especially for cats with kidney disease. Veterinary-labeled LR and human-labeled LR are the same solution; buying it here often costs far less than buying bags one at a time from a clinic. Your veterinarian should still decide how much to give and how often. See our guides to Lactated Ringer's for dogs and cats and sub-Q fluids for cats at home.
