Dextrose IV solutions compared

Each dextrose fluid combines sugar (dextrose) with water, saline or Lactated Ringer's. The dextrose adds calories and is quickly metabolized by the body, which is why many of these fluids behave differently in the body than they do in the bag.

D5W (5% dextrose in water)

D5W is dextrose and sterile water with no electrolytes. It is isotonic in the bag, but once the dextrose is used by the body it leaves free water behind, so it acts as a hypotonic fluid. Clinicians use it to replace free water and as a carrier fluid for many IV medications. It is not used for fluid resuscitation.

D5½NS (D5 0.45% NaCl)

D5 1/2 NS, also written D5 0.45 NaCl or D5 half normal saline, is 5% dextrose in half-strength saline. It is hypertonic in the bag and hypotonic once the dextrose is metabolized. It is one of the most common maintenance IV fluids in hospitals, often with potassium added by the care team.

D5NS and D5LR

D5NS (5% dextrose in normal saline) and D5LR (5% dextrose in Lactated Ringer's) are hypertonic in the bag but behave like their base fluids, normal saline and Lactated Ringer's, once the dextrose is metabolized. They provide fluid and electrolytes along with some calories.

D10W (10% dextrose in water)

D10W contains twice the dextrose of D5W and is hypertonic in the bag. It is typically used under close clinical supervision when more calories or glucose are needed.

Choosing a dextrose solution

Dextrose fluids are usually ordered by a doctor, nurse or veterinarian for a specific purpose. Buy the exact solution your care plan names. People with diabetes or blood sugar problems should use dextrose fluids only as directed by their clinician. For general hydration, most people choose normal saline or Lactated Ringer's instead.

Dextrose IV fluids FAQ

What is D5W used for?
D5W is used to replace free water, provide a small amount of calories, and as a carrier fluid for IV medications. Because it acts as a hypotonic fluid in the body, it is not used to restore blood volume.

Is D5 1/2 NS hypotonic or hypertonic?
Both, depending on when you ask. D5½NS is hypertonic in the bag, but once the dextrose is metabolized it acts as a hypotonic fluid in the body.

What is the difference between D5NS and D5½NS?
Both contain 5% dextrose. D5NS uses full-strength 0.9% saline; D5½NS uses half-strength 0.45% saline, so it delivers less sodium and more free water.

Can I buy dextrose IV fluids without a prescription?
Yes. You do not need a prescription or license to order dextrose IV bags from us.

Do you offer bulk pricing?
Yes. Clinics, practices and hydration businesses can request case pricing.
